IBD – Pathophysiology

IBD is an autoimmune disease – a disease where the body perceives substances which are normally found in the body as foreign and therefore triggers the immune system to attack. In the case of IBD, the immune system perceives food, bacteria and other materials in the intestines as foreign and attacks. The body will send white blood cells to the intestines, where they produce chronic inflammation and ulcerations.
